Hi,
I have been using Ubuntu (and it's KDE equivalent Kubuntu) for the last 7 months, and as a desktop Linux it appears to be very good (stable, regular (6 month) update cycle, lots of apps available via repositories).
When you install Ubuntu you are given the option of a "server" install, which is just a basic install without any GUI or other apps. You can then hand-pick which GUI (if any) and which apps you want to install. I have used this method to install it on a very basic (P1 233) laptop, so I could configure it exactly as I wanted.
It might be worth a try, if you have a spare drive floating around to test it on...

But what were his reasons for not thinking its great?
If you dont know how to use it I can imagine it wouldn't be great, but I have heard of people using it for servers without an issue.

Ubuntu and a load of apps were on last months PCFormat, which I have lying around somewhere, if it's as stable and ok for server as you say I might just load it up to give it a whirl, cheers.
