Directories - worth it?
There seems to be a huge number of directories cropping up these days - are they worth submitting to any more?
I think they are, but even DMOZ probably isn't worth as much as it used to be. A backlink is good, and DMOZ itself is high pagerank, but a lot of the smaller directories, while ranked high on their front page, aren't so good when you dig deeper. The category your site ends up in could be a PR0 sub-page that hardly anyone will ever see.
What do you think?

Google favors DMOZ. It's what they use to make their own directory, so even though the sub-page may only be PR0, it's still worth a lot. Most backlinks are good. Some people argue that if the page has more than 30 outgoing links, the link is worthless. It's very easy for a directory to get that many links on a page, but I still add mine. I don't do it by hand, though. I try to get as many links as possible, mainly for the PR. I just lost an auction on SnapNames where a pretty stupid domain name went for $1,550 just because it was a PR7.

I wasn't referring specifically to DMOZ when I mentioned the PR0 thing (wow, are there really pages on DMOZ that low?). You make good points though.
What software do you use to add your pages to directories?

The software I use is custom programmed by me. I plan on releasing it soon, though. Currently it submits sites to several hundred directories. There are a few other features I would like to add, plus more directories. It is a script, but the amount of work it does is enough that it timesout before completing. I am thinking about making it a standalone script, or setting up some type of database of jobs along with a cronjob that completes the database jobs, if I want to keep it web-based.
