Default The Girl Effect

I just came across http://www.girleffect.org/ and figured I would share this with the GeekBoards crowd. So, what do you think? Is it a good way to help change the world for the better? Seems to me that they have an interesting concept.

Yeah, I think it is a good concept. Though I would argue that there needs to be a boy effect cause as well. It shouldn't polarize to one gender. When young people in general receive more education and feel that they can contribute to their society, they will make wiser choices that also benefit the rest of the world.

Part of their argument, or rather theory, is based on the idea that girls reinvest 90% of their income back into their families where guys reinvest 30-40% similarly. I read that somewhere on their site, so it seems that is at least partly why they are focusing on girls. Before reading that I also thought it was odd or unfair in a way for them to be focusing on one gender, but by doing so they might achieve better results.

hey John,
You can't get very far into the site if you won't agree that the world is a mess.
I like the flash though. Nicely done.
As to girls putting 90% of their income back into the family, that isn't the girls I know or their math doesn't add up. No. Please. Don't throw tomatoes at me!

Well, in certain parts of the world they might be right with their statistic. But definitely not all parts of the world. On that point I do agree!

I see, well that makes a lot more sense, and I can see the logic in focusing the effort on girls. It's very interesting to read that statistic, maybe girls are raised with more of that family bond. Or maybe it's more innate for them, from biology. But here in the U.S. yeah I'm sure that statistic looks a lot different. Probably a lot less on both sides.
