Default Logos: Create Your Own

When you go to make a logo for your site how do you come up with it?
For me I just think about what my site is around and then I think of things that would go good for example for my old joke site I used a jokers hat in the logo.

I've never designed my own logo.

When I describe what I want to the designer, one thing that I always ask for is easy to read text!

Sometime soon I'd like to purchase Photoshop and learn to do some of my own design.

Is there a less expensive program you recommend in the meantime?

I've created plenty of theoretical logos for some site should I ever create one, but I've never had the commitment to create one/the time. When I think of a logo, I fall half asleep during class and one pops up into my head.

I try to sit down with a pen and paper first and then go onto Photoshop. If I don't get a truly unique concept, I don't go with it because to me, logos have to be perfection.
