If you only have one computer you can either setup your PC so you can dual-boot the new OS with Windows or use virtualization. I highly recommend going the virtualization route. VirtualBox seems to be a really good free virtualization software. You could also try Microsoft Virtual PC software as well, but it doesn't seem to be very well suited for Linux/Unix at least in my experience.

If you want to run unix on windows box you could use virtual server to run Unix. Then Linux works like an application on windows box.
Another option is to setup dual boot server. If you going for dual boot you have to first create linux partition from partition magic and then proceed with bootable CD.

Why? Are you wanting to experience a different operating system?

If your trying to experience something an operating system other then windows why not go with a user friendly operation system. Ubuntu is a good one for people that have not experienced a different environment.

Don't run it in windows it will not ever work, Windows does not like anything that is not windows. You will have to build a boot loader for it there is a couple of them out there one in particular, GRUB.
