Default Custom control panels

Has anyone had a custom control panel developed?
Im thinking of doing this. You could really make something much more targetted at your users and what they need.

I imagine it would be expensive to have someone develop a custom control panel though.

Unless you know how to program, it would be very expensive to get custom control panel developed. Not only that Linux has a variety of control panels. I am sure you can find one that meets your needs.

I am actually interested in programming my own. How many are free where I can get the source, though? My plan is to program my own control panel based on the stuff I want it to have. Once that's good and working, I need to make sure my server can actually handle being a server, and then it gets shipped to the data center. Then I become famous, the guy that made the currently nameless control panel....

I often thought of writing my own control panel (I am a programmer) but the am ount of effort involved is just way too much. If your needs are modest, then it might not be usuch a bad idea, but to do something as complex as cpanel, interworx or direct admin for example would take one person years from scratch.

Instead, I would consider looking into http://www.web-cp.net which is a nice looking open source panel (much easier to use than webmin). The good thing about this particulr panel is that all userdata is stored in a mysql database (as is information on vhosts, DNS records, email accounts etc) and it allows you to use a veriaty of differant programs together, such as you can use powerdns if you like, or bind if you must (bind is probably the biggest security risc now that sendmail doesn't install as an open relay).
