I would rather say that the PageRank itself is not important - it's the work behind the pagerank. Without it the pagerank would be something like zero in most cases

Basically Page rank is the indication of importance of that particular web page on SERP.

High PR of a certain web page determines how much significant and popular that particular URL is in respect of search engine and there is very much probability to get crawled by search engine most frequently for those web pages having High PR.

PR tells how important a page in Google's eye. PR is calculated from the link juice coming from incoming links to a page.
