Default Howdy!

I came here looking for help backing up files with a new Toshiba 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Dive HDDR500E04XL.
The included software gives the choice to backup/choose files/folders or backup entire system. I just want to backup photos/videos/music and a select few other files so I check the "files/folders" option but it still copies the entire system.
I want to be able to backup these files on my desktop downstairs and easily transfer them to the laptop upstairs.
Also when I try to view the files it just shows one large file (is that an image). I've never done backups in the past, I just copy/burn them to disk.
I want to be able to view all the files/folders on the drive.
I'm at work and am going to uninstall the software the installed itself on my computer, then reformat the Toshiba (Is this a good idea?) also I've about it being FAT32 or NTFS?? and then hope to just drag and drop unless I get some better tips.

Thanks,

Steve
