Default twain source

I have had a lot of trouble reinstalling my canoscan N1240U I thuoght I had it all sorted, started my first copy and a screen came up "unable to detect the twain source"I think I might need a bit of help detecting that myself, Any helpers out there who can explain this in normal speak??

And while we are on the subject, can anyone explain why it did not work when I posted my question, and today a hour ago I was making a list of the things I want my computer bloke to fix, I tried it again and it did work?? I have not done anything to it???
