I haven't used a screen saver in years. Maybe because I've switched computers so many times and forgot about it. Right now though I don't really need one anyway, whenever I'm on the computer I stay on the computer, it's only idle when I log off or shut down.
Screen savers are only necessary for old CRT monitors. They have no practical use anymore to prevent image "burning", however they are useful for other purposes. You can password protect them to prevent people from using your computer. Also they can be fun to look at. I used to have an aquarium for my screen saver that allowed you to customize fish etc. It was fun to look when I wasn't using my computer.
