It most likely didn't go through. The reason I usually close GC at times like this is so that the database is not being modified while I'm working on the upgrade process. I can run backups while GC is online, all that does is slow the site down a bit for a few minutes. But for upgrades it's best to take GC offline to avoid potential problems.
