The directories that have SEO-friendly links, are they worthwhile?

How can you tell apart the scams from the genuine directories? I've encountered many that send you spam.

Has anyone enjoyed success from submitting their site to a directory? Did you receive many visitors and customers? About how much did you make because of traffic coming from the directory? Was it free? If not, how much did it cost?
