DNS Server?

I don't know much about DNS servers, so could someone please give me a link to some information or explain to me what they do?

All I know it stands for Dynamic Network Services. I found some information at the following link http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/d....htm?terms=DNS
Hope it helps :).

Well, it told you wrong. DNS stands for Domain Name Service. Basically, it is used by computers connected to the internet in order to translate names into IP addresses. All comms on the net is between IP addresses, and the names are added more for the convenience of humans (especially with IPv6).

An excellent resource on DNS is http://www.zytrax.com/books/dns/ It explains in reasonable details the basics of how it all works, and takes you through configuring bind with plenty of examples including delegating nameservice to other servers and setting up master / slave servers for redundancy.

yah but its really tricky stuff i find

It can be tricky at times. Just image if we didn't have it and we had to use numbers instead of words. It is easier to tell clients the names instead of the IP's. I have had some get confused because we listed the IP's of the nameserver along with the nameservers.

Most people find this helpful and some just get confused.

Dealing with DNS issues are a complete and total pain in the butt. Some ISP's are so strict on issues that even the slightest error can make the site inaccessible for some part of your user base.
