Do you have a screen saver?

I do, it's the default that comes with a Toshiba laptop though :p I have heard that not keeping a screensaver somehow helps your computer. Not sure how, but I have heard that it does.

Anyways, do you have a screensaver? If so, what it is? Why do you keep it?

I keep mine because I don't bother changing it and it looks kinda techy which I like :D

Post your thoughts + comments :D

ebittner 04-23-2006 06:14 PM

I do not really have one I just have it set so that after 10 min the screen goes back. I have really never had a use for a screen saver.

sphinx 05-03-2006 01:16 PM

I don't use a screensaver. Just like ebittner, I set my pc to go in stand-by mode after 5 min. For some reason I hate screensavers.

cantstraferight 05-06-2006 06:52 PM

I just use a standard windows screen saver

I did have a matrix screen saver for a while but i must have lost the file after the last reformat of windows.

etali 05-13-2006 09:33 PM

I have a AMD 64 screensaver of a chip flying around inside a PC then busting out of the monitor. Its quite fun to watch.

fab 05-25-2006 09:20 PM

No, I don't use screen saver either. I'm using a Sony LCD for my PC and it goes into stand-by mode after some time. I don't think screen saver really helps while most of us are using LCD now.

Lamer980 09-03-2008 05:19 AM

I use the Folding at Home screensaver, been so for over 5 years now!

DominicXavier 10-21-2008 02:07 AM

Yes I do use screen savers both in my lappy & desktop PC. Screen savers are predefined computer programs that are programmed to prevent burn-in (the burning of an image into the phosphor dots inside the CRT after hours of the same image being rescanned). It also increases the scope time & performance of the monitors.

I know you wrote this post two years ago, but if you ever find out if and why a screen saver helps a computer, do let us know!

I haven't used a screen saver in years. Maybe because I've switched computers so many times and forgot about it. Right now though I don't really need one anyway, whenever I'm on the computer I stay on the computer, it's only idle when I log off or shut down.

Screen savers are only necessary for old CRT monitors. They have no practical use anymore to prevent image "burning", however they are useful for other purposes. You can password protect them to prevent people from using your computer. Also they can be fun to look at. I used to have an aquarium for my screen saver that allowed you to customize fish etc. It was fun to look when I wasn't using my computer.

marshtric 12-11-2008 09:44 PM

I don't use a screensaver. set my pc to go in stand-by mode after 5 min.

awarepoint 12-15-2008 04:41 PM

My PC doesn't have a screen saver and I actually prefer it because it reminds me to turn off my screen when I walk away from my computer for more than twenty minutes or so. It gives me a reason to be more mindful I guess in saving energy.

sara_criss 12-22-2008 10:39 AM

Hey, I am using a "starfield" as screen server, that is usually coming with windows XP, I really love that, when I see that, I feel that I am going inside of it and getting a kind of mental relax :)

cutebokchoi 06-13-2009 11:56 AM

My monitor switches off after like 10 mins of idle, so I have no need for a screen saver.

Ranana_fush 06-14-2009 03:55 AM

Do you have a screen saver

I actually have two TVs. Both are Samsung, but one is a 26-inch HDTV LCD model and the other one is an older 4:3 analog set I bought eight years ago.

nixies 06-16-2009 03:06 AM

i've got ones of recent holiday snaps. I know it's chessy but It always cheers me up.

neteuropa 06-16-2009 07:59 PM

screen saver

I think screen saver is to save some energy when you are not using computer. I do not use since many years ago. But probably it make senses for offices and other places where many times you go out of computer work or are on phone calls.

The screensaver is just good, because it keeps something flashing on your monitor when you not using it, instead of just plain black screen. To much graphics that is actively running can make your CPU slow.

dvdreplication 07-01-2009 08:39 AM

No! I don't want to use the screen saver. I just hate screen savers.

lga1983 07-17-2009 06:19 AM

I don't use screen saver. My computer just goes on stand by after 5 minutes when it is not on used... I hat screen savers!!

grinter 08-13-2009 11:44 AM

I use to use a screen saver. Always was told that it helps your screen last longer, but never knew why. Now I never use it. Screens are so cheap these days that it doesn't really matter anymore.

uday1583 08-14-2009 12:11 PM

Hey even i dont have a screensaver.. i dont like having it on my notebook and moreover i feel the system can go to stand by rather being on screensaver as it saves a lot of power too. thanks

I use Webshots Screensaver & Wallpapers

Yes I have several screensavers. The one that I prefer most is the Webshots Desktop Application which allows you to download beautiful pictures from their website and also use them as a screensaver. It is very cool! Try it out.

Cas 08-16-2009 09:30 AM

No, it only annoys me.

UnDeRoAtH 08-16-2009 08:28 PM

SamSimom... I have followd your advice... it goes fine... :-)

davebuoy 02-10-2010 07:09 PM

Yup, and a really cool one. This hot little blonde was riding her bike in a short skirt coming right at me. I whipped out my camera and got a pic, she didn't even know.

there's more to the story...

I had stopped to get a sandwich for lunch an hour earlier. While waiting to be called for my sandwich I went to the drink station. Coming around the station to find a seat this hot little blond and I almost ran right into each other. I found a seat and waited. This girl was wearing a SHORT red n white stripped dress, and had the second hottest legs I've ever seen. She was about 20 and cute as hell. An hour later I was on 4th street at the marriott when I saw the same girl riding her bike up the street, I reached into my brief and got out the camera. the rest is history.
