Ubuntu for a server?
Could the Ubuntu distribution be used to run a server?
Or is this strictly a client linux distribution? I'm only asking as I've heard alot of hype over this distro, but still have not read anything about it being used on a server. Thanks! ________ iolite vaporizer review |
I've read similar things about Ubantu, it seems to be more of a desktop OS at this point, like SuSE. It should be interesting to see if more people start to adopt it as an alternative server distrobution.

I haven't heard too much about Ubuntu. But if you want a really stable server then I would use Centos. Its a complete clone of Red Hat EL. And its free. On top of that the Centos has a strong community and they are really helpful if you have any problems. Centos is mostly used for production servers. But would work well on home servers too. For more information on Centos visit www.centos.org.

Hi,
I have been using Ubuntu (and it's KDE equivalent Kubuntu) for the last 7 months, and as a desktop Linux it appears to be very good (stable, regular (6 month) update cycle, lots of apps available via repositories). When you install Ubuntu you are given the option of a "server" install, which is just a basic install without any GUI or other apps. You can then hand-pick which GUI (if any) and which apps you want to install. I have used this method to install it on a very basic (P1 233) laptop, so I could configure it exactly as I wanted. It might be worth a try, if you have a spare drive floating around to test it on... Daniel |
Though there is a server option i wouldnt reccomend it i dont speak from experience but one of my friends tried and said it wasnt all that great and told me not to try it.

But what were his reasons for not thinking its great?
If you dont know how to use it I can imagine it wouldn't be great, but I have heard of people using it for servers without an issue. |
