I think Webmin is the most under rated control on the market today. If you are not running a web hosting company. Their simply is no reason to pay for a paid control panel.

Webmin is free and easy to use. It also gives you full control over your server. From running cron jobs to adding users to the control panel. Webmin does it all! You are right, since Cpanel is so dominant, other software like WebAdmin is often overlooked.

I did try it out once, but I ended up going back to Cpanel. That was mostly due to my inpatience for learning though - I did feel that WebAdmin was powerful enough to be better than cpanel.

Also depends on your users and target audience. I think of CPanel for the mainstream hosts looking to target a wide-range of customers varying in web design experience. WebMin / UserMin isn't so straight-forward like CPanel for the non-tech savvy person looking to throw a simple webpage out there on the net.

Webmin is server administration. Usermin is user administration. They shouldn't go near web hosting (well, you could use it for someone that needs a shell too). They aren't designed for that.

I would have to say DirectAdmin, h-sphere, or cPanel are nice ones.

Virtualmin just went pro, they have made a paid version to compete with cPanel and DirectAdmin. Its feature rich, but I cant see anyone adopting it over cPanel.

I tried Virtualmin. And, it ran very slow. It took forever to do the tasks it had to do. It was slow just getting the information!

I wonder if the paid Virtualmin is any better? I know it comes with anti virus and the whole 9 yards. But I think its way over priced.

Webmin does seem like a good managing panel, but why would i bother using webmin if i can just use less time and carry on using CPanel? I am considering it though, once i get some time and patience :)

Cpanel costs lots of money though. (so I have heard)

I would not want to pay that every year for Cpanel but if you were a hosting company it would be good to have because it is so widely used and it is a known standard.

I will agree with you on this one, if your just running personal websites. I do not see the point of paying all that money for cPanel. Depending on who you co-locate your server with you could rent cPanel for $25+ per month. But thats still $300 per year. And as I said before Webmin is free and it can do any thing cPanel can do plus some.

I think a lot of hosts use it though because it is well known and people want to see that they are using a well known control panel like that on there servers and people most likely have used it before then on another host or somewere,

I really like the ease of cPanel, and the fact that there are custom skins available for it.

I do agree though - cPanel is so dominant, it's become..."implied" with everything. Webmin (which I've never heard of) seems like a decent program, but just doesn't have the flexibility, look, or features that I want.

We have more than 10 servers at the moment and we use ISPConfig. Great linux control panel, free and has great forum support.
