First News Thread: Geno's Is English Only
|
Or some free publicity
|
That's assy, but I would expect nothing else from someone who sells "freedom fries." That said, he's free to do what he wants. I wonder if, on balance, it will help or hurt business.
In other news, ew cheesesteak. |

I can understand the frustration of citizens not speaking the official language (this is something I face daily), but what about tourists? One of the many things on my to do list when I visited Philly was to have a cheesesteak. Sure I speak English, but what about those visiting the city who don't, but want to partake in a Philly tradition? It doesn't exactly emote brotherly love...

It isn't exactly brotherly love at all. |

What a typo! |
Not a fan of the philly either. Much more of a club sandwich or burger kind of person. But not steak on a bun.... give it to me on a plate.
|
I sure love cheesesteak! It is important for everybody in America to learn English, that's for sure. I'm surprised that a restaurant owner is taking a more active approach toward making this happen than most politicians or teachers do.

I'm just trying to figure out how a counter person would know what someone wanted if the customer didn't order in English. I don't know of any restaurants that teach their employees how to speak in a zillion different languages so that they understand what someone is ordering if they come in speaking Russian, French, Spanish, Chinese, etc...
|
I applaud this guy. I hate it when you go to fast food places and the workers barely speak English, they always screw up your order.
|
I think people don't take an active approach in teaching new immigrants English/encouraging them to speak English because they're worried that these immigrants would sue them for discrimination.

I'm glad that they're encouraging people here to speak English. Folks in other countries expect it of us when we go there--it's just common courtesy to try to speak what everyone else does. It's not xenophobic when you go to other countries and have to speak their language, so why is it labelled as such here? It makes things easier for the servers, too. Good job, Geno's! |
Give me Pat's any day of the week. I never ever want to try Geno's when Pat's is across the street.
Now I'm hungry. I want Pat's! Anyone in Philly wanna mail me a sandwich? :D |

Which official language would that be?? Last time I checked, that bill was still up for discussion. |

Geez, I want GC back. It's so hard to remember some people without being able to search what they've posted. Makes sense though. Although we have had several conversations about English being the de facto, not the official language of the US. |
This sounds like it's strictly for publicity against Pat's. He even says that if a tourist comes in they're happy to help them order in English. Having been in food service, I certainly wouldn't want to assume what someone wants if I can't understand what they're saying.
