[SEO Article] What is PageRank?
What is PageRank?
PageRank is Google?s method of measuring a page?s ?importance.? When all other factors such as Title tag and keywords are taken into account, Google uses PageRank to adjust results so that sites that are deemed more ?important? will move up in the results page of a user?s search accordingly. A basic overview of how Google ranks pages in their search engine results pages (SERPS) follows: 1) Find all pages matching the keywords of the search. 2) Rank accordingly using ?on the page factors? such as keywords. 3) Calculate in the inbound anchor text. 4) Adjust the results by PageRank scores. In reality, it?s slightly more complex and we?ll discuss this in more depth later, but for now the above description serves our purposes. It?s worth noting that PageRank is a multiplier and is not just simply added to the score. Thus, if your page had a PageRank of zero, it would rank at the very end of the SERPS. How is PageRank determined? The Google theory goes that if Page A links to Page B, then Page A is saying that Page B is an important page. PageRank also factors in the importance of the links pointing to a page. If a page has important links pointing to it, then its links to other pages also become important. The actual text of the link is irrelevant when discussing PageRank. MORE SOURCE ________ MegaSquirtBB |
Good definition for Page Rank. Thanks for posting this. Google Page Rank is very important because this is what is considered to see how is the traffic to your site.

It is cool to hear about PR. However, I am sure there are more other factors are there than PR in determining ranks. For an example, If you search for a keyword in google, the site with PR2 will be on 4th place and a site with PR0 will be on first place in some cases. That means, not only the PR but also, some more other things, such as linked anchor texts etc etc also are being a part of determining the traffic.

How Important Is PageRank? PageRank is one of many factors that determines where your web page appears in search result ranking, but if all other factors are equal, PageRank can have significant impact on your Google rankings................. What is PageRank? PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. Google shows that when one page links to another page, it is effectively casting a vote for the other page. The more votes that are cast for a page, the more important the page must be. Also, the importance of the page that is casting the vote determines how important the vote itself is. Google calculates a page's importance from the votes cast for it. How important each vote is is taken into account when a page's PageRank is calculated. PageRank is Google's way of deciding a page's importance. It matters because it is one of the factors that determines a page's ranking in the search results. It isn't the only factor that Google uses to rank pages, but it is an important one........... |
That was really great post regarding Page Rank of Google. I think you have studied a lot about it. This will obviously help the rookie webmasters to step ahead for their website promotion.

Achieving a high pagerank is not an easy task. It is a bit like a popularity contest. The more popular or the more one way links to a page the higher the pagerank.

Google Page Rank
Google assigns a numeric weighting from 0-10 for each webpage on the Internet. A 0-5 Page Rank is considered mediocre and above 5 is great.

This is a very informative post.
This is a very informative post. Thanks for defining and explaining the concept of PageRank. The PageRank really shows how your website is performing on the web.

PageRank is a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page, used by the Google Internet search engine that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is also called the PageRank of E and denoted by PR(E).
Page rank allows you to know the popularity of the website or the web page. Thanks |
I would only add that pagerank is only a Google's metrics method and it is not represent and established web standard. It is a guideline offered by a private company that people (including me) appreciate because of its quality web services and products.

I work with Bay Area Web Design and we're involved in SEO search engine optimization . While we are pretty successful at getting clients on first page search results for "keywords" in Yahoo and MSN (bing) and others.... but Google always seems a problem. All we can come up with is that Google places ALOT of emphasis on it's PageRank system and Backlinks.
Any idea how many backlinks it takes to really make a difference in Google Page Ranking system? Are there any "safe" reliable" companies to contract and have them build textual backlinks for you that won't get you penalized by google? |
I don't think its the quantity of back links but more quality and how close it is to the actual subject of the website.
if you link a low rank automotive help site from a high rank html forum site it would not be looked at in the way you would want it. The link is totally of subject and has nothing to do with each other. Just a thought i really do not even want to try to understand google, Whatever they have or are doing is working. |

Seems it doesn't count like it used to anymore. :) As a small Bay Area web design and Bay Area SEO company this is great news as it should be for all of the many small operations and small local businesses everywhere that have a website and trying to make decent search rankings..... |
Great post and great thread. Thank you to everyone for sharing. Is google the only site with with a PR10? If so, seems like the whole process may be a bit skewed?

Agree with fellow posts. Gaining pageranks takes patience and hard work. Remember, SEO is long-term and continuous.

Great post. Thanks...for sharing. Pagerank is essential in today's competitive online industry. You'll want to enlist the assistance of an SEO expert or firm to help you gain top page ranks!
|
I would rather say that the PageRank itself is not important - it's the work behind the pagerank. Without it the pagerank would be something like zero in most cases :)
|
Basically Page rank is the indication of importance of that particular web page on SERP.
|
High PR of a certain web page determines how much significant and popular that particular URL is in respect of search engine and there is very much probability to get crawled by search engine most frequently for those web pages having High PR.

Good information. Every webmaster want good PR of their site.

PR tells how important a page in Google's eye. PR is calculated from the link juice coming from incoming links to a page.
